A collection of some of my favourite images.
Click a pic for details about how and where the image was taken, some have stories, some are just pretty pictures.

One of Four
One of four waterfalls along the succinctly named ‘Four Waterfalls’ Trail in the Brecon Beacons, Wales.
We spent a good weekend camping in the area with the original intention of photographing in the mountains, but was being very very Welsh. Fortunately the nearby waterfall trail was a perfect fall back subject, more rain = more waterfall!

Brecon Beacons at Sunset
Sunset from Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons, Wales.

Seascape Through a Porthole
A super long exposure of the sea, shot through the window of a windbreak on the promenade at Thornton-Cleveleys, UK.

Sunset in Shoreham
The sky lights up with colour over a lonely pier in Shoreham-by-Sea, UK.

The Roman Aqueduct of Segovia!
The massive aqueduct bisects an outrageously pretty city. A structure that has dominated the skyline of Segovia for nearly 1900 years, it's an utterly ridiculous example of roman engineering and it's almost inconceivable that it stands without mortar.
If you're ever in Madrid and have got bored of wandering around aimlessly, hop on a bus and get yourself to Segovia!

The Bell Jar
A close up image of a water drop hanging from a twig, reflecting the flowers behind.

Star Sailor
The Ship's Funnels lined up perfectly with the Milky Way as the ship sailed through the Needles Channel into the Solent, England.
Bit of a chore to take as ships famously don't sit still very well, but this night was especially calm and especially clear, so I could just about steal 20 seconds of exposure time without it becoming a mess of star-trails. The ship's funnels were illuminated by the faint glow of radar screens and other monitors on the ship's bridge, it's amazing how much light they produce.

Cuenca at Dusk
A sweeping panorama of the valley below, using the colour contrast of the blue hue of the stormy twilight with the orange glow of the city, and a sweeping curve in the shape of the valley swerving around convent on the left hand side.
This image is a 15 shot stitch of the Cuenca skyline, the shots were taken with about a 1/3rd overlap of 1 second f/8 52mm shots.

She Sells Giant Metal Sea Shells on the Sea Shore
"Mary's Shell" a metal art piece set in the sea off the coast of Cleavleys on the Fylde Coast, Lancashire.
This is a super-long exposure taken as the waves washed through the shell, creating an ethereal seascape, contrasted only by the dark metal.
Taken with a 16 stop filter and a polariser and a great deal of patience fighting against light leaks and sun flare! One of the very few photos that I came away with that hadn't been spoiled!

Spring in Retiro
Nikon D750, Nikkor 50mm f/1.2
1/650s f/2.0 ISO 100
A shot from my day out in Retiro Park, Madrid, (which you can read about in my blog post here!). There's a similar shot on my Instagram taken at f/1.2, but the lens was having a hard time with the bright sunlight, so a stopped down shot fixed that and brought the flowers in focus a little better. (I read somewhere that you'd have to be and idiot to try and use this lens in broad daylight, but I'm not very clever)

The Path of Light
A view of St Paul's Cathedral from the Millennium Bridge, London

The Sunkissed Mountain
The Matterhorn at sunrise. Cloud every day of my Zermatt trip, except for one Morning and night where the clouds parted and left this stunning mountain glowing in the distance.

Break the night with light
On a small hill, in a small village, is a small chapel. Above it is an infinite swathe of cloudless night sky,
To take this shot, I had to run out at about 1-2am, find the field that supposedly contained this chapel, in a village i'd never heard of, and fire my camera wildly into the darkness until i found the thing!
Once I'd found the place amid the darkness, I had to try and compose a shot without being able to see the building and then run around with my phone trying to light up bits of the foreground so that the grass and the chapel didn't just come out black. I imagine it would have been quite a peculiar sight for anyone who glanced towards the hill that night.
This is a vertical panorama of 3 shots, so that I could get the Milky Way from corner to corner, for scale of how much sky and how many stars are in that picture, Orion is seated just above the roof.

Religion in Twilight
St Paul's Cathedral, London, Seen from the Southbank. The Millennium Bridge in the foreground leading across the Thames

One Tree
A lonely tree on the side of a steep hill.
My first real go at using the Formatt hitech 16stop filter. Great fun to use...if you can keep yourself amused during the 10 minutes you're waiting for the exposure to finish!
Clouds drifted past quite conveniently but the changing light over the duration of the exposure makes it guesswork to a degree how long you need to keep it going

Distorted Politics
City Hall, London. As seen through my crystal ball. Still working on an easy way of keeping my hand out of the picture, whilst keeping positioning of the ball and focus right! Any suggestions more than welcome...

The Hand of Fog
You get to see some strange weather at sea. But it's not often that you see another ship get snatched by a fog bank that looks like an outstretched arm...

Sweeping Statement
St Stephen's Tower as seen from Westminster Cathedral

Yet It Does Not Move
Pendle Hill stands firm against the passing of time. Clouds whistle by, shadows lengthen and tree branches sway.
NIKON D750, 24.0-85.0 mm f/3.5-4.5, 52mm, ƒ/8, 553s, ISO 200

Life in a Waterdrop #2
One of my few forays into macro-photography.

Sails on the Solent
As a navigator on board a ship in the Solent, I can always rely on yachts getting close enough to photograph! Using a polariser to remove the glare from the water and increase contrast in the sky was critical in making this yacht stand out against dramatic clouds and the dark water.
