Lavender, Wells and Windmills

Ashton Windmill

Lavender,

Wells and Windmills

It’s been a while since i last took my dust-gathering camera out and about, so over the weekend I’ve endeavoured to find at least a couple of things to shoot in the surrounding area. I packed my bag with virtually every piece of photography equipment i have and meandered off into the wilds of Somerset.

First I got out to a lavender farm in the village of Faulkland, the lavender season really runs June to July, so arriving in early September meant that i didn’t really know what to expect or even if there would be anything worth shooting. But you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, and I was tired of never taking any shots.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was at least some colour left in the fields, so if not to take a great photo this year, it gave me the chance to ear-mark a photo for next year, maybe to visit at sunrise or sunset, or even just with some slightly more interesting light.

NExt up was the historic city of wells, which i really just visited for coffee and cake, but I still needed to take more photos to make the carrying nearly 10Kgs of camera gear feel remotely worth while. There’s a few picturesque points around the city, but i’d briefly walked by a little road called ‘Vicar’s Close’ a few times and wanted to get a shot from there. However, it was a little bit busy with tourists and there was scaffolding on the Cathedral in the background, so i thought it was best not to waste too much time there this time.

Last up was the first thing that came up when I googled ‘things to photograph in somerset’. Ashton Windmill is an 18th Century mill, set in the middle of absolutely nowhere. It’s a pretty and picturesque location, but very limited in what images are possible due to layout of the area. The best images that I’ve seen online really demonstrate spectacularly colourful skies, rather than the windmill itself, and on this particular day, that was not something that I was blessed with. However I came away with some nice enough photos and a bit of video footage for now, maybe they’ll be the basis for more creative images in the future.
